A separate Museums Branch in ASI was created in 1946 by Mortimer Wheeler. After the independence, there was a spurt in the growth of site museums in ASI. At present there are 41 site museums under the control of ASI.

Bhubaneswar Circle was established in April, 1985 and is responsible for looking after the 78 monuments of national importance spreading in 30 districts of Orissa including one World heritage monument viz. the Sun temple at Konark. The monuments and sites under its jurisdiction are varied in nature. They include pre-historic sites, proto historic sites, forts and fortifications, epigraphical records, rock cut architectures, Buddhist monuments/sites, tanks, temples, ancient bridges etc. The circle is conserving and managing the monuments and sites through its five sub-circles viz. Konark, Puri, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Dhenkanal and two site offices at Boudh and Udayagiri.
